TREKKING ROUTE NO. 12
STOK-HEMIS (via)MARKHA VALLEY
(Round Trip - 8 Days)
It is most easily accessible and a beautiful trekking route, popular and frequented by all trekkers to this region.
The paths are well defined and rivers are crossed by newly built bridges
Best Season : June to October end
1st Day : Stok-Foot of Stok-la (4900M).....3 hours
After passing Stok village and following left bank of the river for two hours, leave a small pass on the left, continue onto a small valley and camp overnight. It is the foot of Stock-la. |

2nd Day : Foot of Stok-la-Stok-la (4900M)-Yurutse.....6 to 7 hours (Same route description as in Route No. 10, 6th Day )
3rd Day : Yurutse-Ganda-la-Skiu.....6 to 7 hours (Same route description as in Route No. 10, 5th day, upto Shingo). Skiu is a few hundred metres away to the east of Shingo.

4th Day : Skiu-Markha.......7 hours
After passing Markha through Skiu, you arrive at Chaluk village.
Cross the river, walk along the left bank, cross again and after a short climb, come across a beautiful village with very good camping sites beyond houses near the river.
5th Day : Markha -Tchatchutse....6 to 7 hours
A little ahead of Hankar, leaving broad valley on the right side, cross bridge,
which joins the trail from Hemis-Padam via Jumlam (Route No. 6) and Hemis- Darcha via Rupshu (Route No. 5). Now valley narrows and goes higher.

Cross onto the left bank by a bridge and arrive at Tchatchutse pasture for camp.
6th Day : Tchatchutse-Nimaling(4700M).....3 hours
Walk near a small lake, cross pastures to reach Nimaling (4700M).
It is a most beautiful valley in Ladakh and Kang Yaze (6400M)
peak dominates the valley. From Nimaling, there are many routes leading to the summit.
7th Day : Nimaling-Kongmaru-la(5150M)-Shang......8 hours
From Markha its nearly 2 hours climb to Kongmaru-la (5150M).
Go down upto 4700M-a beautiful campsite- then to a stream, now descent into gorges till Chukirmo, then Shang. A small gompa is 1 hour away from Shang.
8th Day : Shang-Hemis.....3 to 4 hours |

Walking in river-bed again, then following a good path and going to the left bank arrive at a dusty trail and by passing a small house and series of chortens arrive at Martselang. Leave Martselang and arrive in Hemis. Drive to leh.
