TREKKING ROUTE NO. 7
HEMIS-PADAM (via) JUMLAM
HEMIS-KONGMARU-LA-ZALUNG
KARPO-LA-CHERCHERU-LA(5200M)-ZANGLA-PADAM............
(Round Trip - 10 Days)
It is a most isolated mountainous route with no villages enroute for 6 to 7 days. It is advisable to trek in dry weather (August-end to September-end).
1st Day: Hemis-Shang..........3 hours
2nd Day: Shang-Latza Kongmaru........7 hours
3rd Day: Latza Kongmaru-Kongmaru-la (5150M)-Langtang Chu Campsite.......7 to 8 hours |

4th Day: Campsite-Zalung Karpo-la(5200M)-Campsite............7 to 8 hours
Upto Zalung Karpo-la (5200M), the route follows as in Route No. 6. Then descend to the west ridge towards the 2nd pass with fluttering flags.

Descend till you reach a beautiful valley, turning towards to your left(west side). Reach a grassy flat area for camp after crossing a gorge.
5th Day: Zalung Karpo-la-Tulit Sumdo(3750M)........5 to 6 hours
Start descending from the camp towards the main stream, after one hour arrive at a valley, which comes from the right and goes upto Ruering-la(5000M).
Reach bank of Khurna river(Chang-Chu). After several crossings of river, arrive at Tulit Sumdo (3750M).
6th Day: Tilit Sumdo-North Camp at (4450M) of the Chercher-la(4950M)...........8 to 9 hours

lit Sumdo, cross Khurna river, continue on the right bank for 1 1/2 hours, pass a valley (3 hours), again pass 3rd valley on the right bank (3 1/2 hours). It is 4000 metres, good camping site. Reach North Camp at 4450 m.
7th Day: Camp- Chercher-la-Zangla Sumdo (3800M).............4 to 5 hours
Descent upto the stream, pass through several gorges, unsaddled horses several times.
Leaving behind the stream after 3rd narrow gorge, go up a gentle slope, arrive Chercher-la (4950M) (2 1/2 hours). Descend the pass and going along the stream, Zangla Sumdo (3800M) is reached.
8th Day: Zangla Sumdo-Zangla...........4hours
Go down the river by changing the trail till it opens out in a valley. Go on right following the stream. Now gradually go up, upto Zangla Castle. A further half an hour away is Zangla Village.

9th and 10th Days : Zangla-Padam............6 to 7 hours or 2 days
From Zangla, there are two Routes:
(i) Cross the hanging bridge of Zangla, then cross to the left bank (impossible for animals). Now its an easy walk towards Rinam and Karsha (3 hours), from there another hanging bridge over Doda river leads to Padam in 3 to 4 hours.
(ii) Follow the road on the right bank of the Zanskar via Tsazar and Thongde then another 3 to 4 hours to Padam.
