TREKKING ROUTE NO. 6
HEMIS-DARCHA (via) RUPSHU
(Round Trip - 11 Days)
It is not much frequented but a wonderful trekking route along a great variety of landscapes.
From Dat, it passes through high Tibetan plateaus (Chang-Tang). Around 4000 nomads live in Rupshu area. Best season is July to September.
1st Day : Hemis-Shang.....3hours
Hemis may be reached from Leh by jeep or bus.
After crossing Martselang from Hemis, climb a valley then walk along the river bed, crossing the river several times. Finally reach Shang, a good campsite. |

2nd Day : Shang-Latza Kongmaru (4800M).......7 hours
Reach Chukirmo. Pass gorges to climb a pass, camp at Latza Kongmaru (4800M) near a low wall for the night.

3rd Day : Latza Kongmaru-Kongmaru-la(5150M)-Campsite of Langtang Chu.........7 to 8 hours
Before descending to Nimaling (4700M) pastures, ascent is steep upto Kongmaru-la(5150M).
From Nimaling, go down a small, beautiful valley, cross a ridge (5000M) and follow rocky slope of fallen rocks upto Konga Wangpo (5100M). Night halt near Langtang Chu river.
4th Day : Campsite (4700M)-Zalung Karpo-la(5200M)-Sorra(4200M)......8 to9 hours
fFrom campsite, Zalung Karpo-la(5200M) is reached in 5 hours.

Descend the western ridge, cross 2nd pass, turn left to the valley floor and go on for 3 1/2 hours to reach Sorra (4200M).
5th Day : Sorra-Dat(4200M)............5 hours
Dat village is inhabited throughout the year. It can be reached after passing through several manis and chortens.
6th Day : Dat-Yar-la(5000M)-Lungmo Che........6 hours
The Dat-Dango route is fairly easy. Reach foot of the pass Yar-la (5000M), then on its a easy climb to a pass that offers excellent view of Rupshu. Proceed to Lungmo Che(4550M) for night halt.
7th Day : Lungmo Che (4550M)-Lun.........5 to 6 hours
Reach a large valley along the Zara Chu river. Pass the villages Sangtha and Yakbu.
The next village is populated by Tibetan nomads, it is a good camping site.
Now 1 1/2 hours further to south. After crossing a valley on the left, Lun is reached.

8th Day : Lun-Marang-la (5300M)-Takh............7 to 8 hours
Reach Lun track. An hour's trek will take you to the Military Camp-Takh for night halt.
9th Day : 10th & 11th Days : Takh-Baralacha-la-Darcha
From Takh follow Leh-Manali Highway (you may drive to Manali) or pass through Sarchu (4253M)(Manali-222km), Serai Konjung, Baralacha-la(4650M)-Zingzingbar (a Military Camp for road maintenance), Patseo, Darcha, Manali.
