TREKKING ROUTE NO. 3
PADAM (3650M) - THONGDE - LA (5490M) - PHUKTAL - PURNE (3745M) - PADAM
(Round Trek - 7 Days) (Best Recommended period mid-August to mid-October)
It is most adventurous and a difficult round-trip trek.
There is hardly any village in between Padam and Phuktal, except Shadi, a tiny village, that too is in a side valley.
Horses are impossible beacause of gorges and gorges. After Phuktal, trail from Darcha, joins at Purne and Purne to Padam in Route No 1.
1st Day : Padam (3650M)- Thongde (3450M)... 3 hours
There are two routes to cross Tsarap (i) Follow the track to Pipiting upto metal bridge, |

Then it is easy until Thongde (ii) Go down Padam, cross wooden bridge, follow the right bank of the Tsarap.

2nd Day : Thongde - Thongde-la(5490M)... 7 to 8 hours
From Thongde Gompa, into the mountains for 2 1/2 hours then last 200 metres will take you to Thongde-la (5490M).
Another 2 1/2 hours after the pass, going down upto the first large valley forest and further 1 1/2 hours and crossing several rivers, you will see a Habitable Cave on the left bank. Night halt.
3rd Day : Habitable Cave - Shadi........6 hours
Walking along the main stream and crossing many-many rivers for 3 hours, path goes up onto the right slope.

After one hour passing through a small plateau, Shadi village follows. From Shadi, you can go to Hemis via Jumlam, Charchar-la by crossing three passes- Rolang-la, Lar-la and Pandang-la.
4th Day : Shadi- Phuktal.... 6 tp 7 hours
From Shadi village valley widens and a small Tantak monastery and two houses dominates the scene.
Descent from Tantak to reach river Tsarap (this is the junction of trek from Darcha via Baralacha-la).
Now the path is well marked at time precarious till Phuktal monastery.
5th Day : Phuktal-Ichar.... 6 to 7 hours
6th Day : Ichar-Bardan Gompa.......7 hours
7th Day : Bardan Gompa- Padam...3 hours |
