TREKKING ROUTE NO. 4
PADAM (3650M)-THONGDE(3450M)-ZANGLA-KARSHA GAMPA-PADAM
(Round Trip - 4 Days)
1st Day : Padam (3650M)-Thongde(3450M)..3 to 4 hours
Below Padam town cross eastern rope bridge on the right bank of the Lunak. The route to Thongde leads to Lamayuru.
Monastery is the key attraction here. While descending from the monastery, there are mountains on either side of the Zanskar river and in the distance-the Karsha Gompa.
A most dangerous, arduous route (not recommended) turns east-ward from Thongde through Sahdi Ravine to the Phuktal Gompa. (for details see Route no. 3)
2nd Day : Thongde (3450M)- Zangla
Follow Zanskar river to the north-east. Zozar is the next large town. |

Half way between Zangla and Zozar, is a rope bridge, leads across the Zanskar. There is nothing much to see, except a castle of the one-time kings of Zanskar and chortens.

3rd Day : Zangla-Karsha Gompa
From Zangla route goes to Lamayuru and Leh via Markha valley. Go back few kilometres and cross scenic rope bridge.
Trail continues to Pishu-Lingshat Gompa-Lamayuru and on left towards Padam via Rinam. After walking for 5-6 hours to the south-west arrive at Karsha.
Karsha Gompa, the largest and most important monastery in Zanskar, is controlled by the younger brother of the Dalai Lama.
Karsha's most important festival is the Karsha Gostor usually in early January. The library of the gompa is also worth-seeing and Karsha's butter tea is famous. |
4th Day : Karsha-Padam
Cross Doda river (Stod) by a rubber dinghy (pay Rs. 10/- or so) or go towards Rankiut (via) Lami and Kusser and stay overnight at Tungri. The Tungri Bridge take you to Turkun. From Tungri the route leads back past to the Sani Gompa, Salapi and Ranzam to Padam.
